Sanjay Dutt is one of those rare breed of actors who are always in demand whether their films have recently been successful or not. After resurrecting his career with Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai, the actor is now looking forward to his latest action thriller Knock Out directed by ace director Mani Shankar.
“I only work with people I like and bond with and Mani Shankar is one such person. I don’t think of his previous hits and flops. I work from the heart and not from the mind which is why I don’t work with big production houses. Our bonding reflects in Knock out,” he says, adding, that considering he and Irfan have no scenes together, emoting for his role was all the more challenging.
Looking back at his career and three decades of his association with showbiz, Sanjay says the most important change he has found in the film industry is that it has become more professional. “When I debuted, the industry was not this corporate. Earlier we would confirm dates for films orally. But now the industry has become more professional. The quality of movies has improved,” he says. On the personal front, Sanjay, who faced legal battles, drug problems, imprisonment and loss of loved ones, is now a happy man. With his wife Maanyata about to give birth to twins, the actor is ecstatic as he is looking forward to bringing up his children, something he couldn’t do for his daughter Trishala, who is in the US. “Maanyata is an amazing person and I am lucky to have her in my life. She takes care of me and has grounded me completely. She is now giving me two children and has made me a very happy person.”
He, however, got a minor setback recently when he was denied a visa to the US and could not attend Trishala’s graduation ceremony.
“A graduation ceremony is a big thing in the US for kids. I wanted to go and see my daughter, talk to her friends, teachers and see what she is doing there. I was shocked when I didn’t get a visa. I am not involved in terror cases and it is just a minor arms case. My first wife Richa was a US citizen and if I wanted I could have taken US citizenship then. But Trishala is very excited about her future brothers or sisters.”
The actor however, is not too keen about Trishala joining films. “This profession is not bad but it is just that my father was always against Dutt women acting. Every family has its rules and so have we. My father never wanted it and for his sake I can’t let Trishala act in movies,” he said.
On a different topic, the actor says he loves Hyderabad. Actors Venkatesh, Nagarjuna and Chiranjeevi are close family friends though he rues that he doesn’t get to meet them often enough.
“I love the food here and the way the city has grown in the recent past. I have many friends in Tollywood and have also done films for B. Gopal and Rajendra Prasad. I recently watched Magadheera of Ramcharan Tej and it was a fantastic movie. I don’t get to meet all my friends here often and I keep in touch with them only over the phone.”
